“I’m Not Ready Yet…” - The 3 Thoughts That Keep First-Time Buyers Stuck

June 29, 20265 min read

If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling Rightmove in the evenings, half curious, half serious, you’ll probably recognise this feeling.

At first, it’s just a look.

Then you start saving properties.

Then one day, you see one and think:

“I’d actually go and view that…”

And almost immediately, another thought follows:

“I’m not ready yet.”

For many first-time buyers, that’s where things pause.

It’s not that you’re not interested, and it’s not always about affordability either. It’s usually just that something doesn’t feel quite right about taking that next step.

It’s Not Always About Money or Timing

When people think about buying their first home, they often assume the biggest barriers are financial.

Deposit size, mortgage rates, and credit score, to name but a few.

And yes, those things matter, but they’re not usually what causes the delay.

More often, it’s the quieter thoughts in the background - the ones that don’t get talked about as much, but still shape what you do next.

1. “I’ll Waste Their Time”

You might be thinking:

“I don’t even know what I can borrow yet… I’ll look into it properly when I’m a bit closer.”

So you leave it.

Maybe you tell yourself you’ll come back to it next month, after you’ve saved a bit more or when things feel a bit clearer.

There’s this sense that you need to have everything figured out first - your numbers, your deposit, your plan - before you even speak to a first time buyer mortgage broker.

But in reality, that’s not really how it works.

That first conversation is where most people start figuring things out. You’re not expected to have all the answers; that’s the whole point of it.

Most people who book that initial chat aren’t ready to buy straight away. They’re just trying to understand where they stand.

We speak to people all the time who thought they were “just looking”… and realise they’re actually much closer than they expected.

So rather than wasting anyone’s time, you’re doing what most successful buyers do early on - getting clarity before making decisions.

2. “They’ll Try to Sell Me Something”

This one sits quietly in the background, but it’s a real concern for many.

Maybe you’ve filled in a form before and instantly regretted it when your phone rang 10 minutes later. Or you’ve had that feeling of being pulled into something before you’re ready.

So it feels easier not to start at all.

And to be fair, no one wants to feel like they’re being sold to, especially on something this big.

But that first conversation isn’t about making decisions. It’s about understanding your options.

A good first time buyer mortgage broker isn’t there to rush you. They’re there to talk things through, explain what’s possible, and give you a clearer picture of how this could look for you.

There’s no obligation to move forward, and no pressure to act before you’re comfortable.

In fact, most people come away from that first chat thinking something like:

“That was actually a lot simpler than I expected.”

3. “I’m Not Ready Yet”

This is the one that tends to keep people stuck the longest, because “ready” feels like something you should be before you take the first step.

But if you’re honest, it’s quite hard to define what “ready” even looks like.

Maybe you’re still saving and not quite sure what “enough” is.

Maybe you’ve never actually checked what a lender would say, so everything feels a bit unknown.

Or maybe you’re just waiting until things feel a bit clearer before doing anything serious.

So you leave it, and leave it…..

You keep saving, keep watching the market, maybe keep checking properties now and again…

But you never quite move past that stage.

Then, before you know it, a few months have passed, and you’re still in exactly the same place.

The important thing to understand is this:

You don’t become ready before you get clarity - you become ready because you get it.

The people who move forward aren’t the ones who felt 100% certain from the beginning.

They’re usually the ones who decided to find out where they stood, even if they weren’t entirely sure what the outcome would be.

Why These Thoughts Matter More Than You Think

On their own, these thoughts don’t seem like a big deal.

They sound sensible and responsible, but together, they create a loop.

You think about buying, pause, and tell yourself you’ll come back to it later.

And then, a few weeks down the line… you’re having the exact same conversation in your head again.

Waiting feels like the safe option, like you’re giving yourself time to prepare properly.

But often, it just delays the moment when things actually start to make sense.

So What Does “Starting” Actually Mean?

Starting doesn’t mean applying for a mortgage tomorrow.

It doesn’t mean booking viewings or making offers, and it definitely doesn’t mean having everything perfectly figured out.

For most people, it just means having that first proper conversation.

The one where you actually find out:

  • What you might be able to borrow

  • What kind of deposit you’d realistically need

  • Whether you’re closer than you think

For a lot of people, that’s the moment things shift.

It stops being something vague in the background… and starts to feel like something you can actually get a handle on.

A Final Thought

If you’ve been thinking about buying for a while, but keep coming back to “I’m not ready yet”…

You’re probably not missing anything major; you’re just missing clarity.

And without that, it’s very easy to stay in that same loop, thinking about it, putting it off, and coming back to it again a few weeks later.

For most people, the turning point isn’t when everything suddenly clicks…

It’s when they decide to find out where they actually stand.
